Document your solutions appropriately and work independently. The computer generated data is only for support of your conclusions. In each case start the analysis with a hand computation even if it gives only a very crude approximation to the solution. Remember that quantity is not a substitute for quality. Your exam is due at 5 p.m. Dec. 10, 1997. (For video distance learning students, the due date is Dec. 17, 1998.)
For each FEM analysis supply at least the following: a clear plot of the mesh showing
elements, node nos., boundary conditions and loads; indicate what material properties were
used; high light the important computed results in the print-outs; summarize these results
somewhere in your write-up, i.e., the maximum displacement was xxx.xx inches
in the global Z direction at node yy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Solve text problem 2.18 using L1 = 200 mm, L2 = 100, h1 = h2 = 40, hc = 20, aluminum as the material and a distributed downward load of 1 N/mm along the beam instead of the concentrated load given.
Determine the magnitude and location of the maximum displacement. Convince me that your results are accurate.
2. Solve text problem 3.25 using H = L = 6.0 inches, h = 3.0 inches, l = 4.5 inches, R = 0.5 inches and a thickness of 0.25 inches. The material is steel. Apply a tensile loading of 500 psi in the vertical direction along the top edge of the plate. Eliminate the rigid bar. Find the magnitude and location of the maximum von Mises stress in the neighborhood of the hole. Ignore any stress concentrations at the support. Again, convince me that your results are accurate.
3. Determine the location and magnitude of the maximum hoop, axial, and von Mises thermal stresses of the problem discussed in Section 8.6 of your text. You may ignore the gap along edge I-J of the text model. Assume the material is continuous with no gap at this point.
Return this sheet as the cover page of your solution.
