8-1 Introduction

Quadrilateral elements with straight or curved edges are useful in modeling boundaries of arbitrary shape and are widely employed for plane stress, plane train, and axisymmetric analysis. An example mesh is shown below.

In section 8-2 the shape functions and strain-displacement relations for a four node quadrilateral are developed.
