Problem 9 Assigned 10-20-05; Due 10-27-05
Use finite element methods to find the maximum stress in a plate with a circular hole in a state of plane stress due to a tensile load applied uniformly along the shorter edge of the plate.(ANSYS Tutorial Figs 2-2, 2-3) The steel plate is 100 mm long, 40 mm wide, 1 mm in thickness, and has a 4 mm hole in the center. The total applied force is 10 N. Convert this force into an equivalent distributed load (-pressure) to be applied to the edge of the plate.
Compare your results, in terms of per centage error, with hand calculations using published values for stress concentration factors (see a good handbook or machine design book or www.etbx.com). Remember that the stress concentration factor is usually (but not always) defined as K = Sigma(max)/Sigma(nom) where Sigma(nom) = (Total Applied Force)/(Small Cross Section Area) and the Total Applied Force = Applied Presure x Area.
Use manual h-method mesh refinement techniques to control the accuracy of your solution as in ANSYS Tutorial Lesson 2.
