(a.) Start with a general cubic polynomial and derive the shape function for the 2D beam element. N1, N2, N3, N4 are shown in Figure 2.3-1 in your text.
(b.) Start with the generalized Hooke's law elasticity expressions for a linear isotropic elastic material (EpsX = 1/E(SigX - nu(SigY + SigZ)),etc.) and derive text equation 3.1-3 for the case of plane stress. Repeat for plane strain, Eqn 3.4-11.
(c.) Read section 3.14, p. 119 in your text and use ANSYS or another FEM code to duplicate the results given there.
