Problem 14 Assigned 11-12-04, Due 11-30-04

Find the maximum deflection and maximum stress in a steel cantilever beam 1 x 1 x 10 inches long subjected to a 5 psi. pressure on its upper surface.  Use finite element solid elements to develop an appropriate model using

(a) Brick elements,  (b) Tetrahedron elements

Use 'h' as well as 'p' adaptive solution approaches and compare your FEM results with results calculated using elementary solid mechanics beam theory.

Your FEM boundary condiditions should not overly restrain the vertical and lateral deflections of the model at the wall support if the 3D solid elements model is to behave in a way similar to the elementary beam model.
