Finite Element Thermal Heat Conduction Computer Model for Verifying Thread Connection Effectiveness

Objective: Assist in determining acceptable v. unacceptable threaded connections by correlating collar surface temperature profiles with assumed torque (friction) profiles along the threads.

Proposed Applications:

  1. Predict surface temperature profile as a function of time for an assumed thread friction profile
  2. Estimate the location of thread sections with high contact friction (torque) based on observed temperature profiles
  3. Understand how observed temperature profiles change with time due to conduction heat transfer along the threads

Inputs To Computer Model

  1. Geometrical properties of collar and pin including thread length
  2. Section(s) of thread requiring high torque (high friction)
  3. Time to complete connection
  4. Thermal properties of materials
